Black Fact = 1914- Garrett A. Morgan patented the Gas Mask on this date in 1914. Patent # 1,113,675. This breathing device was used during World War I. In 1916, Morgan used his invention to rescue two people and retrieved four bodies from a gas-filled tunnel in Lake Erie near Cleveland, OH.
With only an elementary school education, Garrett Morgan began his career as a sewing-machine mechanic. He went on to patent several inventions, including an improved sewing machine and traffic signal, a hair-straightening product, and a respiratory device that would later provide the blueprint for WWI gas masks. The inventor died on July 27, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio.#theraydiotwins
