Black Fact=1823 (October 9) -Mary Ann Shadd, publisher of the Provincial Freeman, was born in Wilmington, DE, on this date in 1823. As publisher of this Canadian antislavery paper, Shadd became the first woman on this continent to publish a newspaper.
