Black Fact = 1956 ( Feb. 3) -Auherine Juanita Lucy became the first black student at the University of Alabama on this date. Born on October 5, 1929, in Shiloh, Alabama, Autherine Lucy studied English and worked as a teacher before enrolling at the all-white University of Alabama, which had banned her and a friend’s attendance upon previous efforts. Lucy, who faced threats from a large, out-of-control mob, was later barred from the school again, though she eventually earned her master’s from the institution in 1992.
