Black Fact = 1897 (March 5) – The American Negro Academy was founded on this date. Founded by Alexander Crummel, the organization’s purpose was to promote higher education through literature, science, and the arts.
Throughout his life, Crummell worked for black nationalism, self-help, and separate economic development. He spent the last years of his life founding the American Negro Academy, the first organization to support African-American scholars, which opened in 1897 in Washington, DC.
