Black Fact = 1893 (July 24) – Charles S. Johnson, sociologist, founder of the National Urban League’s Opportunity magazine and professor and President of Fisk University, was in born in Bristol, Virginia. Trained in sociology at the University of Chicago, Johnson studied and wrote about race relations in the United States and abroad. He founded the groundbreaking journal Opportunity and became, in 1946, the first African American president of Fisk University. Johnson died in Louisville, Kentucky, on October 27, 1956.
