1- 1882 (September 8) – Sarah Mapps Douglass, abolitionist, died in Philadelphia, PA, on this date one day before her 76th birthday.

2- 1957 – Althea Gibson, tennis legend, became the first black person to win a major U.S. National Championship when she defeated Louise Brough in the women’s singles final at Forest Hills on this date.

3- 1965 – Dorothy Dandridge, legendary actress, died in Hollywood, CA, at age 41 on this date. Dandridge had starring roles in Carmen Jones (1954) and Porgy and Bess (1959).

4- 1968 – The first “Miss Black America Pageant” was held in Atlantic City, NJ, on this date and Saundra Williams was crowned the first “Miss Black America.”

5- 1986 – Oprah Winfrey made television history, on this date in 1986, when she became the first black woman to host a nationally syndicated talk show. 

5- 2007 – Oprah hosted a $3million fundraiser for Barack Obama on this date in 2007

6- 1981 – Roy Wilkins, the second Executive Director of the NAACP (1931-1977), died in New York on this date in 1981.
