Black Fact = 1963 (July 22) – Floyd Patterson is defeated by Sony Liston and loses his world heavyweight title.
The fight turned out to be a mismatch. Liston, with a 25-pound weight advantage, 214 lb (97 kg) to 189 lb (86 kg), knocked out Patterson at 2:06 of the first round, putting him down for the count with a powerful left hook to the jaw.
Born on January 4, 1935, in Waco, North Carolina, boxer Floyd Patterson won the middleweight gold medal at the 1952 Olympics. He became the youngest heavyweight champion in history in 1956, and four years later became the first heavyweight to regain his title after a loss. Named chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission in 1995, Patterson died on May 11, 2006, in New Paltz, New York.
